About this Guide

This guide supports research on specific topics for one English 250 class. Each tab suggests resources for an individual topic.

They are as follows:

Land of Opportunity: Is the United States still the land of opportunity? (Consider the number of jobs available that provide a person with a livable wage, the number of people who have health insurance, the cost of housing, the crime rate)

Education: How can the ways other countries teach their children help us? Should we change the way we educate our youth?

Stress:  Do Americans suffer from too much stress? Is that stress self-imposed? How does that stress manifest itself?

Quality of Life: What can another culture(s) teach Americans about living a better quality of life?

Gender Roles: Is the definition of a man and woman changing? If so, how are men and women coping with this change? How does the definition of a man and woman reconcile with these definitions of fifty years ago?

Gen X and Gen Y: What are the characteristics of Generation Y (born 1980-2000)? How does this generation differ from Generation X (born 1965-1979)?

Perspectives on History: Pick a historical event of the last one hundred years. Recount Americans’ reporting of it and another country’s reporting of the same incident. To what extent do you agree or disagree with either reporting?
