Finding Books using the Gavilan Library Catalog

Start with Keywords

All research begins with the language that you use to think about your topic. This language provides keywords, or the natural language you use to describe your research topic. Start your search by using keywords to find books, DVDs, and other material in the Gavilan College Library catalog. Remember, you can search the Library catalog from home 24/7!

Search Tips:
1) enter words relating to your topic;
2) use quotes to search phrases: "world wide web";
3) use + to mark essential terms: +explorer;
4) use * to mark important terms: *internet;
5) use ? to truncate (to shorten or cut off at the end):
     adjust? will bring up other versions of the root, i.e. adjusted, adjusts, adjustment, adjustments

Finding Books by Browsing the Library Shelves

The Library of Congress Classification Scheme organizes publications by Subject or Call Number. Each call # is assigned a letter. Below is a list of the Library of Congress Call #s for Fine Arts: 

 

N  - FINE ARTS

 

N  - Visual arts

NA - Architecture

NB - Sculpture

NC - Drawing. Design. Illustration

ND - Painting

NE - Print media

NK - Decorative arts

NX - Arts in general 

 

The art books are in the main stacks on the first floor. Look for the shelf end labels beginning with N.
