A Few Tips

Research is a process, and we rarely move in a straight line from one part of the process to the next.

But it can be useful to think about where you are in the process, and what usually happens at that point.

Step 1: Choosing a Topic and Asking Questions
Step 2: Identifying resources
Step 3: Planning your search
Step 4: Hunting and Gathering
Step 5: Evaluating and Organizing
Step 6: Making It Your Own
Step 7: Communicating Your Findings
Step 8: Looking Back on What You Learned and How You Learned

For example, during step one, often there is a need to gather and build your background knowledge about a topic. There are specific kinds of resources you might look for to do this that are very different (and generally less complicated!) than those you collect when you're "hunting and gathering."
