The Research Process

  1. Decide on your topic: Brainstorm ideas, create a list of synonyms or keywords for your topic.
  2.  Do preliminary search: OneSearch is great for this. Do a preliminary search with some of the keywords or synonyms to see what is available on your topic.
  3. Evaluate your sources: Print, email or save the articles you locate. Evaluate the sources you intend to use. Ask questions. Who wrote the article? What are their credentials and are they specific to your topic? Who is sponsoring the research? Why was the article written? How current is it? Who is the intended audience? Why is this source valuable for your research project?
  4. Take notes: Do not underestimate the value of taking notes. Notes are most helpful when they are well organized and easy to find.
  5. Draft your thesis statement: Be flexible, you may need to modify or adjust your thesis as you progress through your research, according to what you find and what is useful to your to your arguement.
  6.  Write your paper: Start with an outline. Once you've written your paper make sure you revise, revise, revise. If possible, have someone else proof read it for you.
  7. Cite your sources.
