A Few Key Web Resources

Google Searching Tips

Here are a few tips to increase your effectiveness using Google:

  • If you're searching for a particular phrase, place it in quotes.

    • Example: "right to privacy"

  • Websites are categorized by their domains according to these guidelines:

          .com = commercial site
          .edu = university or college site
          .org = non-profit organization
          .gov = government

    To limit your search to a particular domain, enter site: before the domain.

    • Example: site:edu or site:gov (no spaces)

      All your results will come ONLY from that domain.

  • Try adding the phrase allintitle: before your search terms. This will search only the title of the page, which narrows your search to pages that are mainly about your topic.

    • Example: allintitle:social media impact families

  • To limit your search to academic and/or scholarly work, try Google Scholar.

  • Use Google's Advanced Search and learn more on their Help page.
